SKILL DRILLS

This page will post drills and games that coaches can use to teach their players specific skills and techniques.

FOUR CORNER SQUARE PASSING AND MOVING DRILL

Why?

  • A good drill for almost any age group, over U-10.
  • Teaches quick passing and moving off the ball.
  • Teaches players to “get square,” or create a ninety-degree passing angle, to give options to the player with the ball.

How?

  • Set up grids, about 1o by 10 yards. Four players per grid.
  • Three attackers try to possess the ball against one defender.
  • Players move to the corners of the square to receive the ball.
  • Defender becomes an attacker when he/she steals the ball or the ball goes out of play.
  • Or, the defender can become an attacker simply by touching the ball.

What To Say

  • Play quickly. Keep the ball moving.
  • Keep moving off the ball. Don’t stand still.
  • Get to the corners.

FIRST TOUCH SKILLS WARM-UP

Why?

  • A good way to get players lots of touches at the start of practice.
  • Players practice their first touch when volleying, passing, and heading the ball.
  • Players get focused for practice.

How?

  • Use cones to set up a series of squares, about 10 by 10 yards. Get players into groups of four.
  • Two players toss and two players work at once.
  • Working players move laterally, back and forth on one side of the square, practicing various volleys.
  • Can extend drill by requiring more traps and reception techniques. For example, have players receive the ball with their chest or thighs before volleying it back to the tosser.

What To Say?

  • Keep moving.
  • For volleys and passes, lock your ankle on contact.
  • For headers, snap your neck through contact.
